Why I Give

November 27th, 2012 By Renata Lana

Why do I give to Speakeasy DC?

Because I can’t imagine being without Speakeasy DC in my life.  Because when I buy tickets for a Speakeasy DC show, I know I’m going to be seeing some of the best storytelling anywhere in the country.  And because this organization has done more than any other to invite you and me to dare—yes, to dare!—to make great art out of our lives.

Ok, so I’m a little in love with Speakeasy DC, but why not?  It’s like the boyfriend I wish I had–the one who thinks I’m cool when I’m being completely and utterly myself.

And for those of you who’ve had the courage to take a Speakeasy DC class and get up on stage, or who have shared your stories at Salon, I want to say . . . thank you.

Your stories are unforgettable.  They make me laugh, and feel, and they bring sharp relief to all the flaws and greatness that make us human.

So know, when you’re up on stage at a Speakeasy DC show . . . I’m listening.    I’ll probably be somewhere in the back standing by the bar, but you’ve got my attention.  Completely.

In the coming year, new people will be taking Speakeasy DC classes and getting on stage for the first time.  And I can’t wait to hear their stories.

This is why I give to Speakeasy DC.

SpeakeasyDC’s End of Year fundraising campaign is underway right now. If, like Renata, you can’t imagine your life without SpeakeasyDC, then make a donation today.
