    Story District is here!

Story District is here!!! We are so happy about how the kickoff party went and grateful to everyone who attended, volunteered, tabled, performed, danced, tweeted, and helped us get started with this new name on the right foot.

We have heard so much great feedback about the community tabling. Thanks to partners like DC Shorts, Sixth & I, Dance Place, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Washington Improv Theater, Human Rights Campaign, Acre 121, Possibilities Publishing Company, Photography by Alexander, and Branddave.  To our kindred projects that share a dedication to encouraging and supporting creative expression and excellence like Flashband, Docs In Progress, Women in Film & Video, Split This Rock, ReCreative Spaces, Figment DC, Creative Mornings, Impact Hub, Our City Festival, and Washington DC Comedy Writers Group – thanks for making DC more awesome. Special shout-out to our extended storytelling family including Mortified DC, Better Said Than Done, and The Men’s Story Project.

Batala Washington kicked off the show with their signature brand of badass – 15 drummers taking us to Brazil and back.

Sampson warmed the crowd and kept the show moving.

U Street veterans, the Poem-cees, taking the stage with an original song composed special for Story District (See lyrics and listen to track below).

Da Originalz closed out the performances with a Beat Ya Feet Battle. And NubianSpin added a touch of dazzle with their talented crew of dancers.

Big props go to our sister-storyteller DJ Lil’e spinning just the right beats at just the right time all night long.

Story District MVPs – faculty, board members, and staff  -- lined up to take a bow for all the hard work they do to breathe life into Story District.

To make it official, the crowd counted down from 10 at which point Chris Kingsley, Story District’s hard-working board chair did the honors for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and we did the hora! Circles were danced in, chairs were lifted, people were swung, and tunnels were formed.

Possibly the most popular feature of the night were the cupcakes. Thanks to Red Velvet Cupcakery their contribution. Even the gluten-free vegan cupcakes were ridiculous (as in – so good it was ridiculous).

Special shout out to Perfect Shots for the photo booth, and to our T-shirt designers - Soul & Ink - we LOVE this original design and will have these tees for sale at the next show.

Big thanks to our re-brand team – Mike Boyd, of Nice Work Co, who is managing the re-brand; Kendra Rubinfeld, of KRPR , who coordinated all the community tables; Sara Durr, of Durr Communicaitons, and Dedra Owens, of Dot Communications, who make up our PR and outreach team. Last but not least, thanks to Neue Now for our fabulous new logo and visual identity.

    IN THE AIR/STORY DISTRICT

    To all my storytellers
    and modern urban griots
    Mi Casa es Tu Casa
    POEM-CEEs and (real life) heroes

We’ve got all kinds of stories
    The Mommy Dearest type
They talk about their pets or
    Their so called Jewish life

ski instructors / vegan truckers /
    narrators who serenade us
    whistle blowers / modern dancers
folks who got too many chances

    roommates who steal your liquor
    cool ass transgender friends
    all stories have beginnings
others arc & twist and bend

    I might...
Decide to share a thing or two...
    -if that's alright with you
There's nowhere else where I can dare/dare to go there...
And if I share a thing or two...
-you know just what to do
It's in the air and I ain't scared...

    Eyes ears nose mouth
Oxygen is your friend no doubt
Breathe it in & exhale it out
Give the wind what you thinking bout...

In the middle of a memory made someone else is up in your shade
Every one of them words you said
    Serenade for the unafraid...

    Innovate
    Or relate
    Actuate your inner-state
    -diamond district's not a state
    ...yeeaaah that's a different story

    Everything is hunky-dory
    Enjoy the repertory
    8 million naked stories
    Awesome-est of inventory... [DANCE BREAK]

    I might...
Decide to share a thing or two...
    -if that's alright with you
There's nowhere else where I can dare/dare to go there...
And if I share these things with you...
-you know just what to do
It's in the air and I ain't scared...

(drummers) who like to crank and groove
Jack asses who refuse to move
Fanboys who love to cosplay (folks)
Tied up like fifty shades of grey

People who caught their breath & then
    Realized they had perspective and
others who heard the stories and
    Realized we’re all connected man

    Daredevils swinging from the brink
Say things that got you ponderin
    retell these situations then
Somehow we walk away as friends

    we share our inner half
    people who stumble and laugh
    keep calm and carry on
    Story District’s where...

      I might...
Decide to share a thing or two...
    -if that's alright with you
There's nowhere else where I can dare/dare to go there...
And if I share a thing or two...
-you know just what to do
    It's in the air and I ain't scared...az
