Performer’s Spotlight - Bobak Shafiei
Before our upcoming show "Mind Over Matter", we wanted to get to know some of our performers. For a look at one of our storytellers, check out Bobak Shafiei as he answers some questions about his story and his experiences with mental illnesses.
Do you feel like your mental illness has become part of your self-identity?
Have you ever found it difficult to explain to someone what it’s like suffering from a mental illness?
Definitely. Sometimes embarrassing too.
Does telling a story about mental illness differ from any other kind of story you might tell?
I feel a little bit more pressure to make sure that the audience comes away with some insights about living with the condition
How comfortable do you feel talking to strangers in the audience about your mental illness? Does it feel different than telling this kind of story to your friends, family, or coworkers?
I find most things to be easier with strangers. I’d prefer telling a story to a room of strangers any day.
Does it help to hear other people’s stories about their own mental illnesses?
Absolutely. It’s always interesting to see how people put their experiences with a mental illness into a story and just fascinating to hear about some of the things people are dealing with.
Is there anything you wish you could tell your younger self to explain what was going on at this point in your life?
No, I think I knew what was going on…just didn’t know how to get it under control.
Are there some things you don’t think you’ll ever be able to get out of the category of “dirty”?
Bodily fluids, porta-potties.
